RECALL Because there is constant updating on the dog and cat food recalls I highly suggest to keep track of this dilemma through the FDA and AVMA websites. FDA LINK You can watch the "hot topics" column on the right hand side or the FDA news area in the middle. AVMA LINK The American Veterinary Medicine Association will also provide information on the recall. If considering a raw meat or freeze dried dog food please look at the AFS products that I carry. AFS at Loving Paws The following was released from the American Humane Organization: March 27th, 2007 Much is being reported as well as blogged about the Menu Foods recall of cans and pouches of dog and cat food. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the products are packaged under numerous brand names and are marketed nationwide by supermarkets and pet food retailers. As the FDA investigates this incident, and as pet owners nationwide react to the recall, both the American Humane Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association are urging their members to help spread the word widely about the best course of action. First, obviously, check all of your available pet foods to be sure none of it is among the brands recalled. If it is, destroy it or dispose of it in such a manner that animals cannot get to it. Second, people should be advised to take their ill pet or pets -- or even pets who don’t appear ill but who might have eaten some of the contaminated food -- to a veterinarian right away. Third, they should ask their veterinarian to do the appropriate testing on their pets (blood and urine tests to determine if the pet is in renal failure). The veterinarian will make a determination on a course of treatment and whether hospitalization for the animal is required. Further, ask the veterinarian to provide a report to the Food and Drug Administration, if appropriate, in order for the FDA to gauge the full scope of this problem and to act as the national clearinghouse on information about the issue. Fourth, advise the public to consult the FDA website for the latest news and information on the recall or they can visit the AVMA website, which is being continually updated as new information becomes available. Thank you from American Humane!
